A man lies on a lounge, covered in pizza boxes and cans of soft drink. A pounding headache and a lost will, he lies there with his eyes closed, he has given up. A knock on the door. He groans to himself and turns himself over, pizza crumbs falling to the floor. Another knock on the door. "Leave me alone!" He yells. He coughs and sighs again. "Open the door, Pierre..." A woman's voice reponds.

With a light grumble, he slowly stands up. He sees his reflection in the mirror, an overgrown beard, bags under his eyes and stained clothes. He grumbles, walks to the door and opens it. A woman storms through the door, shoving Pierre aside.

"Look at this place! Look at you!" She starts picking up trash from the floor. "Pierre, it's been months, it's time to pick yourself up!" This woman is Pierre's manager, Penelope. From his rise to one of the world's greats in food to his eventual downfall in the last world championship, she has been there through it all.

Pierre collapses on the sofa again. "Leave. Me. Alone." He turns his back to her. "Pierre..." She softly says. "GET OUT!" He screams.

"No, Pierre. It's not over!" She pulls out of her pocket a sheet of paper, walks over and shoves it in his face. "Look!" She yells.

Pierre glances at the paper. His mind still foggy, he slowly reads, "Underground street food fight. 7:00PM Tuesday. Something to prove... Prove it in the arena..." He throws the paper to the floor. "I'm done, Penelope. I'm out..." Penelope picks up the paper and hands it back to him. "Do you remember what you promised me, Pierre? You promised me, we'd go to the top together! Just because you were beaten once, doesn't mean..." Pierre drops his head and sighs. "Penelope, stop." Penelope, hope still alive in her heart, shouts, "Pierre. This street food fight... if you win... you get another shot? Do you understand! Another shot against John Murphey!" Pierres eyes suddenly light up. "What did you say?" He whispers. "Another shot!" Pierre suddenly has a flash back to his last battle... the defeat. A name flashes in his mind and a fire is lit in his heart. John. Murphey!

"I'm in." Pierre immediately stands up and walks off to take a cold shower. Penelope smiles to herself and takes out of her bag a handful of salted caramel popcorn. "You've earnt it, Penelope!" She says to herself and takes a bite, a huge grin upon her face.

Salted Caramel Popcorn

Servings
30

Prep Time:       00:10
Cook Time:      01:10

Main Ingredients

2 cups of brown sugar
125 grams of butter
½ cup of glucose syrup
1 tsp of salt
½ tsp of baking soda
1 cup of popping corn (unpopped popcorn)
¾ cup of vegetable oil

Preparation
  1. Pour oil into a pot and heat to medium.
  2. Add popping corn to the pot. Put a lid on and wait for the corn to start popping. Shake the pan while it’s popping and remove the pan from heat once most of the corn has popped. Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
  3. In a separate pot, add all the other ingredients and cook on a medium heat. Mix constantly and once it starts bubbling softly, continue on this heat for 5 minutes, still stirring.
  4. Preheat the oven to 120 degrees Celsius fan forced.
  5. Transfer the mixture onto the popcorn and mix well, so that all of the popcorn is covered.
  6. Transfer the popcorn to a baking tray lined with baking paper and spread the popcorn out.
  7. Place the baking tray into the oven and cook for 60 minutes. Every 20 minutes, mix the popcorn.
  8. Transfer the cooked salted caramel popcorn on to some baking paper to cool. Break this mixture up and allow to cool. Once done, you can store this in an air tight container and it will last a few weeks.
